Sherri Shepherd, one of the various species of cackling feminist hens found on the view, has been embroiled in a acrimonious divorce/custody dispute for the last few years with her now ex husband Lamar Sally. What makes this specific divorce unique is that at the center of it all is a child born via a surrogacy contract. Shepherd is trying to shirk responsibility for a child conceived via surrogate to which she agreed contractually to become the “intended mother” upon the child’s birth, an article titled Sherri Shepherd’s Surrogate Says She’s Being Forced to Pay Child Support explains the situation, and boy is it a doozy, here are the details (emphasis mine):
Jessica Bartholomew, the surrogate for Sherri Shepherd and her estranged husband Lamar Sally, is now speaking out. In an interview with Inside Edition, Bartholomew discussed her disappointment in the former talk show host because she’s decided not to be a part of Lamar Jr.’s life.
“I just don’t understand how she can act like this baby is nonexistent. It just blows my mind,” Bartholomew told Inside Edition Thursday night.
Bartholomew, who is 23-years-old, carried the baby who was conceived with Sally’s sperm and another woman’s egg. She also said she had no clue that the couple were having issues until she heard about the split.According to Inside Edition, Bartholomew says she signed a 23-page contract with Sally and Shepherd, who was called the “intended mother,” on September 12th, 2013. Bartholomew says she was paid $25,000.
“She would call up and check on me during the pregnancy in the beginning. At the 20-week appointment, she seemed very excited. She was going to see the baby for the first time… I didn’t see any warning signs right away.”
The baby was born on August 5, 2014, and Shepherd has not had any contact with him. And now Bartholomew is the one being held liable for child support.
Because her name is on the birth-certificate, and Sally has full custody and has applied for Medicaid in California, the state is coming after her for money.
“I am now listed as a noncustodial parent in California. I have a child support case coming against me now.”
On top of being financially responsible, Bartholomew is also angry that Shepherd has neglected the contract they had.
“I am angry with Sherri because she never once contacted me to tell me what was happening. It was kind of like I was left out in the cold,” she told Inside Edition.
Shepherd and Sally’s divorce has not been finalized as of yet. Most recently Sally has threatened to sue Shepherd for abandoning the baby. Shepherd offered Sally $150,000, but Sally figured out that it only amounted to $694 a month over 18 years. Sally feels that a court would grant him more money.
When Inside Edition asked Bartholomew what she would like to see happen, she stated, “I would like to see her sign the birth certificate and take responsibility for L.J. because that’s what she signed up to do and that is the right thing to do.”
Shepherd seems to be of the mindset, not my egg, not my baby.
Where to begin? Not her “egg”, not her baby? Tell that to the men that have been forced to pay child support for children that aren’t biologically theirs. These men were deceived into believing they were the biological fathers of the child via paternity fraud, and through some legal, but far from ethical loophole, were forced to pay up even after it was determined that they weren’t. Then you have people like Shepherd who agreed via contractual law that she would be the “intended mother” of the child, but wishes to back out of it now?
Thankfully, and rather surprisingly, it seems that at least for now, a pussy pass was not extended to Shepherd, although this could change. An article titled Sherri Shepherd to Pay $4K Per Month in Child Support for Baby Born Via Surrogate: Report explains:
After nearly a year of battling it out in court, Sherri Shepherd has finally settled her nasty divorce with Lamar Sally and the fight for financial responsibility over their baby born via surrogate last summer.
The former View co-host will pay $4,100 per month in child support for 10 month-old son Lamar Jr. until the child turns 13, at which point her payments will increase to $4,600, TMZ reports.
The settlement comes just months after the 48-year-old TV personality was officially listed as the legal mother on the birth certificate.
While the case may not have turned out the way that Shepherd had originally hoped, according to the settlement she can still move forward with her fraud claim against Sally, 44, and if the appeals court rules in her favor, she will no longer be obligated to pay child support.
One final request per Shepherd is that the embryos she shares with Sally be destroyed. While he is still reportedly “undecided,” about the matter, should any of them be brought to term, the agreement states that Shepherd will not be financially responsible.
$4,100 per month? when she was only offering a lump sum of $150k for the sum total of $694 per month over the course of eighteen years? Ouch. The only reason I can think of for the courts enforcing this is that in abandoning the child financially, Shepherd would be putting another woman, the surrogate, on the hook for child support. Since the father already has custody, something had to give…that something was Shepherd’s bank account. Interesting times gentleman, interesting times.
